Director of Technical Design
Location: New York, NY
Basic Function: The Director, Technical Design plans, organizes, directs and controls the technical design operations for multiple collections, including performing a variety of pattern making, grading and fitting services, as well as recommending samples to overseas vendors and establishing quality standards for all collections.
Description:
- Drives and evolves technical design strategy, operations, methods and measures of effectiveness to increase market competitiveness in fit and quality
- Ensures execution of design and fit intent into bulk production while maintaining corporate standards
- Develops and maintains fit protocol and standards for multiple Sportswear and Tailored product collection.
- Protects brand integrity through fit continuity
- Drives for continual improvement and innovation to enhance product quality, fit and process effectiveness
- Manages fit model and agency relationships
- High level of complex technical problem solving: providing technical expertise in product fit and construction standards to insure brand integrity
- Travel to sourcing and vendor development offices and factories to work with technical teams to troubleshoot, educate, and understand factory capabilities
- Builds strong relationships with design, production and overseas agents/factories
- Holds self and others accountable for work commitments and outcomes
- Responsible for training, quality, accuracy and overall productivity of technical design staff
- Lead department fit sessions and give approvals for 1st samples through production
- Follows up with factory on any customer complaints on size, fit and construction
- By brand and category– develop and maintain:
- Standardized body charts, tolerance tables, grade tables, how to measure guide, labeling guide, sampling process and construction standards.
Qualifications:
Knowledge: Knowledge of textiles, design standards and specifications, typically acquired through the attainment of a Bachelors Degree in Design and Fashion. A working level knowledge of fabrics, yarn and construction as well as manufacturing machinery specific to the production area. Strong computer skills; preferred programs: computer pattern programs, such as Gerber, Illustrator, Photo Shop, computer spec writing using programs such as Gerber, PDM, and software applications MS outlook, MS Excel and MS Word.
Experience: Ten years performing pattern making and specing duties as well as design/ construction with woven jackets, pants, shirts and knits are required. Knowledge of Women’s Sportswear and Men’s Tailored product a plus.
Skills/Aptitudes: Attention to detail; ability to deal with people at all organizational levels; and good administrative, analytical, creative, organizational, planning, problem solving, and oral and written communication skills with a hands on work ethic are required. Normal color vision is mandatory.
Working Conditions: Office and plant environments. Occasional overtime and frequent interstate and international travel may be required.
